The depressed phase of bipolar disorders represents the predominant clinical burden. The evidence base supporting drug treatment of these illnesses is inadequate but has been significantly added to over recent years. New evidence is available and this will be reviewed. |

| 1.45pm | Hot Topic: Compulsion in the Community On 3rd November 2008, new statutory powers that allows supervised community treatment, implemented by community treatment orders, came into effect in England and Wales. The rationale behind these orders was that the patients with severe and enduring mental illness who are poorly adherent with treatment could be treated under compulsion at an early stage of the relapse of their illness, in order to prevent further relapse into a serious illness.
The legislation was and still is controversial and by no means universally supported. However the Care Quality Commission has reported that the use of Community Treatment Orders in England and Wales has far exceeded official estimates. In fact, recent evidence suggests that mental health services, tribunals and second opinion services from the CQC are struggling to cope with the high demand. This session will look at theoretical and practical issues of CTOs since full implementation. For the Glasgow meeting, this session will be tailored to take into consideration the Scottish Healthcare System. |
